Engagement Strategies

There has been research that shows that the more time students spend being involved in learning activities, the more they learn. Psychologically, engaged learners become intrinsically motivated by curiosity, they become interested, and they show enjoyment. Their most likely to want to achieve their own intellectual or personal goals.

The use of engagement strategies is a powerful teaching tool critical in promoting children achievement because it:

• focuses children on learning

• supports learning specific skills and concepts and

• provides children positive associations with learning

The following are some strategies teacher can use to engage students in the classroom some of which I witnessed while doing classroom observations :

Teachers must have a positive attitude - Teachers need demonstrate enthusiasm, intensity and a little humor into the lesson

Game like activities - if you are teaching numbers, shape, or colors have the children play a bingo game

Integrate technology into the lesson- Use the mimio. If you are teaching time, put a clock on the white board and have the students go up and move the hands on the clock. This is good for kinetics learners.

White boards - Give each student a white board and a dry eraser marker. have them write down their response when guessing at the question.

Pin-pong paddles - Give each student a pig-pong paddle. Instead of them just raising their hand have them raise the paddle.

Power point - For middle/high school students. Instead of having them write an essay divide the students into groups and have them present to the class the life of one of the presidents.
